Rockin’ Around Stanford

Take a geological walking tour of Stanford’s campus!

Meet geologists at Stanford and learn about some of the tools they use when they go “out to the field” to investigate rocks. Then we’ll head out on our walk, where we’ll spend time exploring the rocks that make up several of the buildings and sculptures on Stanford’s campus. We’ll learn about where the rocks came from and how they got to Stanford. We’ll also practice making geological observations and use them to think about how the rocks formed.

All ages are welcome to participate!

COVID Information for this event

This Bay Area Science Festival event is an outdoor event that is following the county guidelines of Santa Clara County. Additional COVID requirements for this event include that masks are not required, but recommended.

Please also note that attendees should stay home if sick.

Event Hosts

The geoscientists and students in Stanford’s Geological Sciences department study the properties of Earth materials, like minerals, rocks, soils, sediments and water, to learn about the history and future of the Earth and other planets. Their work also helps us understand risks from natural hazards, availability of natural resources, and interactions between humans and the Earth.

COVID Safety

The Bay Area Science Festival will manage all in-person events with the health, safety and well-being of our staff, volunteers, hosts, exhibitors, and guests in mind. In response to COVID-19, we will be implementing public health requirements for all event hosts and attendees in accordance with local and state guidelines in order to celebrate science safely throughout the Bay Area.

The Bay Area Science Festival encourages you to get vaccinated, wear a mask and practice social distancing. Be sure to check back for updated and more detailed COVID safety information prior to attending.
